Disability benefits play a vital role in supporting disabled people in the UK, who often face lower incomes and wellbeing. Using longitudinal data from Understanding Society, this study examines whether receiving disability benefits leads to greater wellbeing gains than a simple cash transfer. By comparing individuals who receive benefits with those who may be eligible but do not, we find that benefit receipt significantly improves life satisfaction and may reduce anxiety. These wellbeing gains are valued at £12,300 per person annually—suggesting total benefits of £42 billion, exceeding the £28 billion annual cost. The findings highlight the need to improve access and simplify the claims process, rather than restrict eligibility
