Abstract

Falling behind on household bill payments is a particularly harmful form of debt (Salter, 2014) and can affect the ability of individuals to access necessities such as housing and energy (Lane et al, 2018).

This research uses Understanding Society Main Survey data to explore populations who have fallen behind on payments for household bills between 2009 and 2022 in the UK. This study investigates how the level of the UK population falling behind on household bills has varied over time and space. The drivers of trends observed are also explored, including an investigation into the impact of UK austerity measures. The analysis involves the utilisation of descriptive analysis and regression analysis techniques.

This research will further understanding of social and spatial inequalities in the UK. It is hoped that this analysis will further understanding on what factors drive this form of indebtedness and how policy makers can support populations affected by this form of debt.
