Abstract

Public engagement with the social sciences is a key area for the ESRC and UKRI. Traditionally this type of engagement has focused on the general public, through science fairs or media work, but in recent years has evolved to draw in members of the public who are part of research projects or long-term studies. Co-production with the general public is challenging on studies as large as Understanding Society, so the Study has developed a Participant Panel – a smaller group of participants who we can work with on specific topics. Panel members are volunteers from the adult survey and come from a variety of types of household across the UK. The Participant Panel is used for qualitative feedback on new questionnaire content, changes to fieldwork practice, and materials sent to participants. The deeper engagement that we have with the Participant Panel has helped the Study understand how participants interpret the survey and the materials they receive from us.
